Aihole Heritage Complex

Called the "cradle of Indian temple architecture," this early Chalukya capital holds over a hundred stone temples spanning centuries of experimental design, from apsidal chaitya-hall forms to fully evolved shikharas.

Long before Pattadakal or Badami rose to prominence, Aihole served as an early capital of the Badami Chalukyas, and its temple builders treated the whole village as a workshop โ€” more than 120 structures survive, built across roughly three centuries (5th to 8th CE) with almost no two alike. The Durga templeโ€™s apsidal plan, echoing the horseshoe shape of Buddhist chaitya halls, is the most striking example of architects borrowing across religious traditions while searching for a settled Hindu temple form.

The Meguti Jain temple, on a hillock overlooking the village, carries an inscription by the poet Ravikirti dated 634 CE โ€” one of the earliest precisely dated Chalukyan records, and famous for boasting that Ravikirtiโ€™s poetic skill rivalled that of Kalidasa. The simpler Ladkhan temple, with its stone latticed windows and low sloping roof, is often cited as an example of early builders translating wooden village-hall construction into stone.

Because Aihole represents architecture still finding its form, historians regard it as the essential companion site to the more finished temples at Pattadakal โ€” together the two sites, 10 km apart, trace an architectural lineage in real time.

Getting there: Aihole is about 35 km from Badami and 14 km from Pattadakal, forming a natural loop for visitors. The post office is in Aihole village near the main temple cluster.
