The Amriteshwara temple at Amrutapura (Amruthapura) was consecrated in 1196 CE under the patronage of Amrutheshwara Dandanayaka, a general and minister serving the Hoysala king Veera Ballala II. It belongs to the same architectural tradition that produced the celebrated Hoysala temples at Belur and Halebidu, built on a star-shaped plan set on a raised platform and covered edge to edge in dense figural and decorative carving typical of Hoysala craftsmen.

What distinguishes Amriteshwara among Hoysala temples is its shikhara โ€” the tower above the sanctum โ€” which rises unusually tall and slender compared to the more common Hoysala profile, giving the temple a distinct silhouette. Because it lies off the main Belurโ€“Halebidu tourist circuit, Amriteshwara receives far fewer visitors than its more famous peers, despite matching them in sculptural quality, making it a comparatively undisturbed example of Hoysala temple art.

Getting there: The temple is in Amruthapura village in Tarikere taluk, served by the Amritapura Post Office.
