Belagavi Fort
A moat-ringed fort founded around 1204 by the Ratta dynasty and later held in turn by the Vijayanagara, Bijapur Adil Shahi, Maratha, and British powers — a physical record of the Deccan's shifting political control.
Belagavi Fort traces its origins to around 1204, when the Ratta dynasty chieftain Kartaveerya IV established a stronghold here, but most of what survives today — the massive stone-and-brick ramparts and the wide encircling moat — dates to later strengthening under the Bijapur Adil Shahi sultanate, which held the fort for much of the 16th and 17th centuries. Control subsequently passed to the Marathas, briefly to the Mughals, and finally to the British, who annexed it in 1818.
That long succession of rulers left the fort with an unusually layered religious landscape inside its walls: a Jain basadi, a mosque, and temple remains all sit within the same fortification, each added by a different regime. The fort is now protected by the Archaeological Survey of India and sits beside Belagavi’s Sati Kere lake.
Getting there: The fort is within Belagavi city, close to the railway station and central bus stand. The head post office is nearby in the city centre.
