Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple
One of Karnataka's oldest and most architecturally layered temples, built up across the Ganga, Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara periods at the foot of Nandi Hills.
At the base of Nandi Hills stands a temple complex often described as a living textbook of Karnataka temple architecture: the Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, actually a pair of twin shrines (Bhoga Nandeeshwara and Arunachala Nandeeshwara) joined by a later Kalyana Mantapa, built up in stages from the ninth century Ganga period through Chola, Hoysala, and Vijayanagara patronage. Each dynasty added its own structures without demolishing what came before, leaving successive architectural styles visible side by side within a single complex.
The temple’s Kalyana Mantapa, added under Vijayanagara rule, is particularly celebrated for its intricately carved granite pillars, and the complex is traditionally associated with the marriage of Shiva and Parvati, making it a popular site for wedding ceremonies to this day. Its relative obscurity compared to nearby Nandi Hills means it retains a quiet, lived-in atmosphere despite its considerable historical importance.
Getting there: The temple sits in Nandi village at the base of the Nandi Hills ghat road, close to the Nandi Post Office.
