Bidar Fort

Sultan Ahmad Shah Wali Bahmani shifted the Bahmani capital from Gulbarga to Bidar in 1429, and the fort he built and his successors expanded became one of the largest and most sophisticated in the Deccan. Its defences run for over five kilometres, combining a triple line of moats cut into the red laterite plateau with massive bastions and gateways, several of them still bearing Persian and Arabic inscriptions and tilework brought in by craftsmen the Bahmanis actively recruited from Iran and Central Asia.

Within the walls, the fort complex contains palace ruins, mosques, and water-management structures — including a sophisticated underground karez-style water channel system — that together illustrate how deeply Persianate court culture and engineering shaped the Bahmani state’s architecture. After the Bahmani kingdom fragmented into the five Deccan sultanates in the sixteenth century, Bidar passed through Barid Shahi, Bijapuri, and Mughal hands, each leaving further additions to the fort.

Getting there: The fort dominates the northern edge of Bidar town and is close to the Bidar Head Post Office in the old city.
