The town of Chamarajanagar takes its present name from Chamarajeshwara, a Shiva temple associated with the Wodeyar rulers of Mysore, who renamed the older settlement in honour of Chamaraja Wodeyar. The temple’s continued prominence in the town’s civic and religious life reflects the close historical relationship between temple patronage and dynastic legitimacy in the Mysore kingdom, where naming towns after temple deities linked royal identity directly to religious devotion.
As the district headquarters town, Chamarajanagar and its namesake temple also mark the gateway to the forested hill country of the Biligiri Rangana and Male Mahadeshwara ranges to the south and east, making the temple a natural starting point for the district’s wider network of temple and forest pilgrimage sites.
