Devanahalli Fort
A stone hill fort and the birthplace of Tipu Sultan in 1750, later strengthened by Hyder Ali into one of the strongest strongholds guarding the approaches to Bengaluru.
Devanahalli’s granite fort is best known as the birthplace of Tipu Sultan, the Kingdom of Mysore’s ruler and one of the most formidable adversaries the British East India Company faced in eighteenth-century south India. The fort predates him, having been built by a local chieftain, Mallabaire Gowda, but it was substantially rebuilt and fortified by Hyder Ali after he seized it in 1747, turning it into a key defensive point on the northern approach to Bengaluru.
The fort’s circular bastions and thick stone ramparts reflect the transitional military architecture of the period, adapted to withstand artillery in a way earlier hill forts were not. Small shrines and a memorial associated with Tipu Sultan’s birth are maintained within the fort walls, and the site continues to draw visitors interested in the Mysore Sultanate’s resistance to British expansion.
Getting there: The fort lies in the middle of Devanahalli town, close to Kempegowda International Airport, and is a short walk from the Devanahalli Post Office.
