The Malmaddi neighborhood birthplace of Dharwad Pedha, a GI-tagged milk sweet whose recipe was brought to the city by a Gujarati confectioner family nearly two centuries ago.
Dharwad Pedha is a dense, caramel-toned milk sweet distinct from the softer pedhas found elsewhere in India, prized for a slightly grainy texture achieved through slow, careful reduction of milk and sugar. Its origins trace to Thakkar family confectioners who migrated from Gujarat to Dharwad in the early-to-mid 19th century and adapted their khoya sweet-making techniques to local milk and tastes, founding shops concentrated around the Malmaddi area that still operate today.
In 2015, Dharwad Pedha received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, formally recognizing it — alongside products like Mysuru silk and Coorg coffee — as a protected regional specialty of Karnataka, cementing its place as a genuine piece of the state’s culinary heritage rather than just a roadside sweet.
