Gadag Trikuteshwara Temple
An 11th-century Chalukyan triple-shrined temple in Gadag town, closely linked to the birth of Kannada literature through poet Kumaravyasa's legendary composition of the Karnata Bharata Kathamanjari here.
The Trikuteshwara Temple, built by the Kalyani Chalukyas in the 11th century, is a triple-shrined (trikuta) complex dedicated to three forms of Shiva, with an attached Saraswati shrine that gives the temple particular literary resonance. Its ornately carved pillars and step-well tank reflect the same architectural idiom seen at nearby Lakkundi, and the complex was expanded over successive centuries under Chalukya and later patronage.
The temple holds a special place in Kannada literary history: the poet Kumaravyasa is traditionally said to have composed his celebrated 15th-century Kannada retelling of the Mahabharata, the Karnata Bharata Kathamanjari (Gadugina Bharata), while seated before the temple’s Saraswati shrine, seeking the goddess’s blessing for the work.
Getting there: The temple stands in the old town of Gadag, close to the Gadag Head Post Office in the twin city of Gadag-Betageri.
