Gokak Falls
A 52-metre horseshoe-shaped waterfall on the Ghataprabha river, often compared to a miniature Niagara, and site of one of India's earliest hydroelectric power stations, commissioned in 1887.
The Ghataprabha river drops around 52 metres over a broad horseshoe-shaped escarpment just outside Gokak town, a formation frequently — if generously — compared to a scaled-down Niagara Falls. The falls swell dramatically during and just after the monsoon, drawing visitors from across north Karnataka, and an old hanging bridge strung across the gorge gives close-up views of the drop.
Less well known is the falls’ industrial history: a hydroelectric power station built here in 1887 was among the earliest in India, harnessing the river’s drop to power the nearby Gokak Mills, one of the country’s oldest cotton textile mills, founded in 1885. That pairing of natural spectacle and early industrial engineering makes Gokak Falls as much a piece of Karnataka’s technological history as a scenic stop.
