Gulbarga Fort & Jama Masjid
A 14th-century Bahmani Sultanate fort whose Jama Masjid, modeled on Cordoba's Great Mosque, is one of the few fully domed, courtyard-free mosques in India.
Gulbarga (Kalaburagi) Fort was built by Bahman Shah, founder of the Bahmani Sultanate, shortly after he made the city his capital in 1347, and expanded with an outer ring of 15 massive bastions under later rulers. Within its walls stands the fort’s Jama Masjid, built in 1367 by an architect said to have been inspired by the Great Mosque of Cordoba in Spain — one of very few mosques in India covered entirely by a grid of domes and arches rather than an open central courtyard.
As the Bahmani Sultanate’s first capital before the seat shifted to Bidar, Gulbarga’s fort and mosque complex represents the earliest phase of Deccani Indo-Islamic architecture, blending Persian, Turkish, and local building traditions that would go on to influence Bidar, Bijapur, and Golconda.
Getting there: The fort lies on the western edge of Kalaburagi city; the Gulbarga Head Post Office is in the city center, a short drive from the fort complex.
