Ibrahim Rauza Tomb
A twin-structure tomb-and-mosque complex for Adil Shahi Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II and his family, its slender minaret-like finials and delicate stonework earning it comparison as an architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal.
Ibrahim Rauza, built in the early seventeenth century for Sultan Ibrahim Adil Shah II — begun for his queen Taj Sultana and later also housing his own grave — pairs a tomb and a mosque of matching design facing each other across a raised, garden-set platform, connected by a fountain-lined water channel.
Its refined stonework, delicate minaret-topped corners and finely carved calligraphic bands are often described as the aesthetic high point of Bijapur’s Adil Shahi architecture, more graceful in scale than the massive Gol Gumbaz nearby, and are widely believed by historians to have influenced the design vocabulary later used at the Taj Mahal in Agra.
Getting there: Ibrahim Rauza is about 1 km west of Vijayapura’s old city walls, roughly 2 km from Gol Gumbaz and the head post office.
