Ikkeri Aghoreshwara Temple
The Shiva temple of Ikkeri, second capital of the Keladi Nayakas, noted for its finely carved black-stone doorway and pillars from the dynasty's architectural high point in the seventeenth century.
When the Keladi Nayakas moved their capital from Keladi to nearby Ikkeri in the early seventeenth century, they built the Aghoreshwara temple as their new capital’s principal shrine to Shiva. It survives as one of the finest examples of Keladi-period temple architecture, distinguished by intricately carved black-stone pillars, a richly worked doorway, and sculptural panels that show a distinctive local style bridging late Vijayanagara and early Mysore idioms.
Ikkeri itself functioned as the Nayaka capital for several decades before the dynasty shifted its seat again to Bidanur (Nagara), and the temple remains the clearest surviving marker of that brief but architecturally productive period.
Getting there: Ikkeri is a few kilometres from Sagar town, close to Keladi, in Shivamogga district; the post office serves the small village around the temple.
