ISRO Headquarters Landmark

The Indian Space Research Organisation was established in 1969, growing out of the earlier Indian National Committee for Space Research founded by Vikram Sarabhai. Antariksh Bhavan in Bengaluru serves as its administrative headquarters, coordinating a network of centres across the country — from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre in Thiruvananthapuram to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on Sriharikota island — that together design, build, and launch India’s satellites and rockets.

ISRO’s institutional achievements read as a compressed history of Indian technological self-reliance: the Aryabhata satellite in 1975, the indigenous PSLV and GSLV launch vehicles, the Chandrayaan lunar missions, the Mars Orbiter Mission that made India the first Asian nation to reach Mars orbit, and the Chandrayaan-3 landing near the lunar south pole in 2023. The headquarters landmark stands for this entire programme rather than any single building’s architecture — it is the administrative anchor of one of the developing world’s most consequential space agencies.

Getting there: Antariksh Bhavan is on New BEL Road in north Bengaluru; the campus is served directly by the ISRO Post Office.
