Jog Falls forms where the Sharavathi river leaves the Malnad plateau and drops in a single sheer fall of about 253 metres — among the tallest untiered (single-drop) waterfalls in India — split by the terrain into four distinct streams that locals have long named Raja, Rani, Roarer and Rocket, each with its own character depending on monsoon flow.
The falls sit just upstream of the Linganamakki reservoir, part of the Sharavathi Hydroelectric Project that has supplied power to coastal and central Karnataka since the mid-twentieth century, which means the falls’ spectacle now varies seasonally with how much water is released rather than running at full natural volume year-round — at their most dramatic in the monsoon months of July and August.
Getting there: Jog Falls is reached via Sagar town in Shivamogga district, about 100 km from Shivamogga city; the post office sits at the falls viewpoint settlement itself.
