Kanakagiri Kanakachalapathi Temple
The temple town of a small former Hindu samsthana (princely estate) in the Deccan, its Venkataramana-form Vishnu shrine giving Kanakagiri its name and its centuries-old fort-and-temple townscape a distinct identity within Koppal district.
Kanakagiri grew up around its Kanakachalapathi temple, a shrine to Vishnu in his Venkataramana (Chalapathi/Balaji) form, and the town itself carries the deity’s name — “the golden hill.” For generations Kanakagiri was the seat of a small self-governing samsthana ruled by a line of local chieftains, one of the many minor Hindu principalities that persisted in the Deccan interior through the Vijayanagara, Bijapur and Maratha periods before being absorbed into British India.
The temple’s stepped gopuram and enclosed mandapa reflect the layered patronage typical of such samsthana capitals — modest in scale next to the great Vijayanagara temple cities nearby, but locally significant as a living centre of Vaishnavite worship that has continued largely undisturbed for centuries.
Getting there: Kanakagiri lies off the Gangavati–Kushtagi road in Koppal district, roughly 40 km from Koppal town. The post office sits in the town centre near the temple.
