Karwar Rabindranath Tagore Beach
A crescent Arabian Sea beach at the mouth of the Kali river, renamed for Rabindranath Tagore, who visited Karwar as a young man and later drew on its coastal scenery in his writing.
Karwar sits where the Kali river meets the Arabian Sea, its long curving beach backed by casuarina groves and framed by offshore islands. The beach was later named for Rabindranath Tagore, who spent time in Karwar in his youth accompanying his brother, a district judge posted there, and by his own account found the town’s coastal light and seascape formative enough to influence descriptions in his later writing.
Beyond its literary association, Karwar’s beach and harbour have long made the town a natural gateway to Uttara Kannada’s coastline, with the nearby naval base (INS Kadamba) underscoring the strategic value of the same sheltered bay that drew Tagore’s attention over a century ago.
Getting there: Karwar town is on NH66 near the Goa border, with its own railway station; the beach lies a short walk from the town centre and the head post office.
