Kemmangundi Hill Station
A colonial-era hill retreat in the Baba Budangiri range, developed as a private resort by Mysore ruler Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and named after him as Krishnarajendra Giri.
Kemmangundi, formally named Krishnarajendra Giri after the Mysore Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV who developed it as a retreat in the early twentieth century, sits high in the Baba Budangiri range at an elevation of around 1,434 metres. Wodeyar, known for his patronage of public infrastructure and institutions across Mysore state, established gardens and guest houses here that laid the foundations for the hill station’s present-day tourist infrastructure.
The station commands sweeping views over the Western Ghats and lies close to Kudremukh peak and the Bhadra river’s headwaters, situating it within one of Karnataka’s most ecologically significant montane forest tracts. Its relatively low-key development compared to hill stations elsewhere in south India has helped it retain a quieter, more forested character.
Getting there: Kemmangundi is reached by road from Tarikere or Chikmagalur; the Kemmangundi Post Office serves the small hill settlement.
