Khwaja Bande Nawaz Dargah
The domed shrine and library complex of Sufi saint Khwaja Bande Nawaz Gesu Daraz (d. 1422), among the most visited Sufi pilgrimage sites in South India and a symbol of syncretic devotion across faiths.
The dargah houses the tomb of Khwaja Syed Muhammad Husaini Gesu Daraz, known as Bande Nawaz, a Chishti Sufi saint who arrived in Gulbarga in 1400 at the invitation of the Bahmani court and became one of the most influential spiritual figures of the medieval Deccan before his death in 1422. His shrine, built up over subsequent centuries by Bahmani and later Asaf Jahi patronage, blends Persian, Indo-Saracenic, and local architectural elements in its central dome and surrounding halls.
The dargah complex includes a renowned library holding thousands of rare Arabic, Persian, and Urdu manuscripts, and its annual Urs festival draws over a million pilgrims of multiple faiths, making it one of the subcontinent’s foremost symbols of syncretic Sufi devotion.
Getting there: The dargah sits in the Khaja Colony/Mahatma Basaveshwar Colony area near the old Circuit House in Kalaburagi city, not far from the Kalaburagi Head Post Office.
