Kollur Mookambika Temple
A major Shakti Peetha at the foot of the Kodachadri hills, revered as the seat of goddess Mookambika and closely tied to the philosopher Adi Shankaracharya, who is said to have consecrated the idol.
Nestled at the base of the Kodachadri hills on the banks of the Sauparnika river, the Mookambika Temple is one of Karnataka’s most visited pilgrimage sites, drawing devotees from across South India. The presiding deity, Mookambika, is worshipped in the form of a Jyotirlinga fused with a Shakti idol — an unusual dual representation combining Shiva and Devi in one consecrated form.
Tradition holds that Adi Shankaracharya, during his travels establishing Vedantic centers across India, meditated at Kollur and installed the current idol, linking the temple to the broader network of Shakti Peethas and Shankaracharya’s own philosophical legacy.
Getting there: Kollur lies in the Kundapura hinterland, reached via winding Western Ghat roads from Udupi or Shivamogga; the Kollur Post Office sits on Temple Road at the entrance to the shrine complex.
