Kotilingeshwara Temple
A modern Shiva pilgrimage site built around one of the world's tallest lingas, surrounded by more than a million smaller lingas installed by devotees over recent decades.
Kotilingeshwara takes its name from its central conceit: a temple complex dedicated to installing a “koti,” or ten million, Shiva lingas, begun in the twentieth century and still growing as devotees continue to donate and consecrate new lingas across its grounds. At its centre stands one of the tallest Shiva lingas in the world, towering over the surrounding plain and visible from a considerable distance.
Unlike the region’s ancient temples, Kotilingeshwara is a comparatively recent devotional project, but it has quickly become one of Kolar district’s most visited pilgrimage sites, illustrating how new large-scale temple complexes continue to be built and to draw mass devotion in modern Karnataka alongside its much older shrines.
Getting there: The temple is near Kammasandra village in Bangarpet taluk, served by the Kamasandra Post Office.
