Lakkundi Temple Complex
A once-flourishing Chalukya-era town whose surviving cluster of over 50 stone temples and stepwells makes it one of Karnataka's densest concentrations of 11th–12th-century temple architecture.
Lakkundi flourished as a prosperous trading and temple town under the Kalyani (Western) Chalukyas between the 11th and 12th centuries, and its surviving built heritage — more than fifty temples, around thirty stepped wells (pushkarnis), and numerous inscribed pillars — represents one of the richest surviving concentrations of Chalukyan architecture anywhere. The Kashi Vishwanatha and Nannesvara temples are among the best preserved, showcasing the transitional style between earlier Chalukyan and later Hoysala idioms with finely lathe-turned pillars and ornate stepwell geometry.
The town is included on India’s UNESCO World Heritage tentative list under the “Chalukya group of monuments,” and ongoing conservation work continues to uncover fresh evidence of its scale as a medieval urban and religious center.
Getting there: Lakkundi village lies about 11 km from Gadag town on the Gadag–Hubballi road; the Lakkundi Post Office is within the village, close to the main temple cluster.
