Lalitha Mahal Palace
Mysuru's second-largest palace, built in 1921 to host the British Viceroy, its Italianate double-storey facade and central dome modelled loosely on St. Paul's Cathedral — now run as a heritage hotel.
Lalitha Mahal was commissioned in 1921 by Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV specifically to accommodate the Viceroy of India on state visits, and its architecture reflects that diplomatic purpose: a gleaming white Italianate facade, symmetrical twin staircases, and a central dome whose design was inspired by London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral, all set in manicured gardens with Chamundi Hill as a backdrop.
After Independence the palace passed out of everyday royal use and was eventually converted into a luxury heritage hotel run by the ITDC, making it one of the few Mysore royal residences visitors can actually stay overnight in rather than only tour.
Getting there: Lalitha Mahal is about 4 km east of Mysuru Palace, on the road toward Chamundi Hill; the city’s head post office is a short drive away in the town centre.
