Madhugiri Monolithic Fort

Madhugiri hill rises nearly 700 metres above the surrounding plain in a single sheer mass of granite, popularly cited as the second-largest monolithic hill in Asia after Savandurga. Fortifications were raised on and around it from the Vijayanagara period onward, using the hill’s own near-vertical faces as a natural defence that needed only modest additional walling at vulnerable points.

The fort is reached by a demanding stepped path through a sequence of seven gateways cut into the rock, a layout designed to slow any attacking force gate by gate. It was held successively by local Palegar chieftains, the Vijayanagara Empire, and later Hyder Ali of Mysore, whose forces strengthened the defences further in the eighteenth century.

Getting there: Madhugiri town is about 100 km north of Bengaluru via Tumakuru; the fort trek begins from the town, near the post office.
