Madikeri Fort
The hilltop fort of the Kodava Haleri kingdom's former capital, now housing a museum, a British-era church, and district offices — the historic anchor of Karnataka's misty, coffee-growing Kodagu district.
Madikeri (also known as Mercara) was founded by the Haleri Rajas, a Kodava dynasty, and served as the capital of the Kingdom of Coorg before the British annexed the region in 1834. Its hilltop fort — now housing a museum, a British-era church, and district offices — anchors a town that gave rise to a distinct Kodava culture with its own language, martial dance traditions, and cuisine, set against the mist and coffee plantations of the Western Ghats.
Getting there: Madikeri is about 250 km from Bengaluru and roughly 3 hours from Mysuru by road. The Head Post Office is in the town centre, a short walk from the fort.
