Mangaladevi Temple
The 9th-century temple of the goddess Mangaladevi that is traditionally held to have given the city of Mangaluru its very name.
The Mangaladevi Temple, believed to date to the 9th century, is dedicated to the goddess Mangaladevi and is the traditional namesake of the city of Mangaluru itself. Local tradition credits the shrine’s founding to Matsyendranath, a Nath-tradition yogi, with royal patronage from the Alupa dynasty that once ruled the Tulunadu coast — making the temple one of the oldest continuously significant religious sites in the region.
Architecturally the temple reflects the coastal Karnataka style, with a sloped, tiled roofline suited to the region’s heavy monsoon rainfall, and it remains an active center of Tuluva religious life, particularly during Navaratri.
Getting there: The temple sits in the Bolar/Mangaladevi locality of central Mangaluru city, close to the Mangaladevi Sub Post Office on Mangaladevi Temple Road.
