Mudgal Fort
One of the oldest forts of the Deccan interior, its multiple gateways and bastions rebuilt across Chalukya, Kakatiya, Bahmani and Vijayanagara rule, marking Mudgal as another flashpoint in the long Raichur Doab wars.
Mudgal’s fort predates most of its better-known neighbours in the Doab, with a core said to go back to the Chalukyan period and successive rebuilding under the Kakatiyas, the Bahmani Sultanate and the Vijayanagara Empire. Its layout of concentric walls, a moat cut into rock, and several finely carved gateways reflects this long occupation rather than a single builder’s plan.
Like Raichur Fort thirty-odd kilometres away, Mudgal changed hands repeatedly as Vijayanagara and the Deccan Sultanates pushed the frontier back and forth across the Krishna–Tungabhadra Doab through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, making the twin forts a matched pair of witnesses to the same long war.
Getting there: Mudgal is on the Raichur–Lingsugur road in Lingsugur taluk, about 50 km from Raichur town. The post office is in the main market area near the fort’s eastern gate.
