The Sri Jagadguru Murugharajendra (SJM) Matha, popularly known as Murugha Matha, is one of Karnataka’s most prominent Veerashaiva-Lingayat monastic institutions, seated in Chitradurga town beneath the historic fort. Tracing its lineage back several centuries, the matha has functioned not only as a spiritual center but as an engine of education and community welfare, founding schools, colleges, and hostels that have educated generations of students from the surrounding rural districts.
Successive pontiffs of the matha have been influential figures in Karnataka’s social and religious life, and the institution’s sprawling campus — with its shrines, assembly halls, and educational buildings — remains a focal point of civic and religious activity in Chitradurga.
Getting there: The matha complex sits close to the base of Chitradurga Fort in the heart of town, an easy walk or short drive from the Chitradurga Head Post Office.
