Mysuru Amba Vilas Palace

The Indo-Saracenic royal residence of the Wadiyar dynasty, one of India's most-visited monuments and the centrepiece of Mysuru's Dasara festival โ€” and one of the four cities where the Philately Passport itself is sold.

The current Mysuru Palace was built in 1912 after fire destroyed the old wooden palace, designed by British architect Henry Irwin in the Indo-Saracenic style for the Wadiyar dynasty, who ruled the Kingdom of Mysore for over five centuries. Its domes, arches, and stained glass draw on Hindu, Islamic, Rajput, and Gothic influences, and the palace remains the ceremonial heart of Mysuruโ€™s Dasara festivities, when it is illuminated with close to 100,000 lights.

Mysuru Head Post Office, right by the palace grounds, is one of just four philatelic bureaus in the state where the physical Philately Passport booklet itself can be purchased โ€” alongside Bengaluru GPO, Mangaluru HO, and Belagavi HO โ€” making this stop both a historic landmark and, for many travelers, the very place their passport journey begins.

Getting there: Mysuru is about 3 hours by road or rail from Bengaluru. The Head Post Office is a short walk from the palaceโ€™s main entrance on Ashoka Road.
