Pattadakal Temples

Pattadakal’s name derives from “Pattada-kallu,” the coronation stone — this was the site where Chalukya kings were anointed, and its ten major temples were built between the 7th and 8th centuries as a showcase of architectural experimentation rather than a single unified style. Within a few hundred metres, the northern Nagara style (seen in the Kashivishvanatha and Papanatha temples) sits alongside the southern Dravida style (the Sangameshwara and Virupaksha temples), making Pattadakal the clearest surviving record of early Indian temple architecture cross-pollinating between north and south.

The largest and best-preserved structure, the Virupaksha temple, was commissioned by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate her husband Vikramaditya II’s victory over the Pallavas of Kanchipuram — and, according to inscriptions, its architect Gunda deliberately modelled it on the Pallava Kailasanatha temple, which decades later would itself inspire the Kailasa temple at Ellora. A Jain narayana temple from the later Rashtrakuta period stands at the complex’s edge, added after Chalukya rule gave way to new dynasties.

Pattadakal was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987, forming one corner of the Chalukyan triangle with nearby Aihole and Badami.

Getting there: Pattadakal lies about 22 km from Badami and is easily combined with a visit to Aihole and Badami in a single day trip. The post office sits in Pattadakal village a short walk from the temple complex entrance.
