Shivappa Nayaka Palace
A fortified palace built by Shivappa Nayaka of the Keladi dynasty, the seventeenth-century ruler and land-revenue reformer for whom Shivamogga is popularly said to be named; now home to an archaeological museum.
The palace on the banks of the Tunga river in Shivamogga city is attributed to Shivappa Nayaka, who ruled the Keladi Nayaka kingdom in the mid-seventeenth century and is remembered as one of its most capable administrators — credited with a systematic land-revenue survey and assessment system, “Shivappa Nayaka’s Rekha,” that influenced Mysore’s own later revenue administration. Popular tradition holds that Shivamogga city itself takes its name from him.
Built with thick laterite walls in a fort-like plan typical of Nayaka military architecture, the palace now houses an archaeological museum run by the state government, displaying Hoysala and Keladi-era sculpture, inscriptions and coins recovered from across the district.
Getting there: The palace stands on the Tunga riverbank within Shivamogga city, a short distance from the head post office at Gopi Circle.
