Siddaganga Matha Landmark
A centuries-old Lingayat matha on Tumakuru's edge, transformed into a vast free residential school and hostel under the long stewardship of Sivakumara Swamiji, popularly revered across generations as one of Karnataka's most respected spiritual and educational institutions.
Siddaganga Matha traces its origins back several centuries as a seat of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat tradition, but its modern reputation rests overwhelmingly on the work of Sivakumara Swamiji, who led the matha for more than seven decades until his death in 2019 at the age of 111. Under him the matha grew into a free residential school and hostel complex educating tens of thousands of children — regardless of caste or ability to pay — earning it the popular title “Trikala Jnani” and Swamiji himself the Padma Bhushan.
The matha’s daily rhythm of mass free meals, dormitories and classrooms sprawling across its campus makes it less a single monument than a living institution, and it remains one of the most visited spiritual sites in the Tumakuru region.
Getting there: Siddaganga Matha is at Kyathsandra on the edge of Tumakuru city, about 4 km from the city’s head post office and railway station.
