Sogal Someshwara Temple

Sogal’s Someshwara temple, dedicated to Shiva, sits in the thickly forested Khanapur taluk of Belagavi district — a stretch of the Western Ghats foothills historically important as a corridor between the Deccan plateau and the Konkan coast toward Goa. Villages along this route often carried temples that doubled as waypoints for traders and pilgrims moving between the two regions, and Sogal’s setting, amid sanctuary forest and hill streams, situates it firmly within that older geography.

The temple’s simple, weathered stone construction reflects a long history of local patronage rather than imperial commissioning, and its greatest draw today is as much the surrounding landscape — close to the Bhimgad and Mahadayi forest tracts — as the shrine itself.

Getting there: Sogal village lies in Khanapur taluk, roughly 45 km from Belagavi toward the Goa border. The post office serves the village directly.
