Srirangapatna Daria Daulat Bagh
Tipu Sultan's teakwood summer palace on the island-town of Srirangapatna, its walls covered in painted murals of court life and the Battle of Pollilur — one of the best-preserved Indo-Islamic palace interiors in South India.
Daria Daulat Bagh — “the Garden of the Sea of Wealth” — was built in 1784 by Tipu Sultan as his summer retreat, a two-storeyed teakwood pavilion raised on a low plinth in the middle of a formal Mughal-style garden of cypress and fountains. Its walls, both inside and out, are covered in fresco-style paintings that are almost unique survivals of eighteenth-century Mysore court art.
The murals record Tipu’s own history in vivid colour, most famously a long panel depicting the 1780 Battle of Pollilur, where Mysore forces routed a British Company army — painted, tellingly, from Tipu’s own point of view, with his elephants and rocket-men prominent and the British in retreat. Other panels show court processions, hunting scenes and views of Tipu’s capital.
Getting there: Srirangapatna is on NH275 between Mysuru and Bengaluru, and the palace lies about 1 km east of the town’s fort area. The post office is in the town centre, close to the bus stand.
