St. Philomena's Cathedral
A Neo-Gothic cathedral built through the 1930s under Mysore Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV's patronage, its twin spires modelled on Cologne Cathedral and, at completion, among the tallest church buildings in Asia.
St. Philomena’s Cathedral was built between 1936 and 1941, replacing an earlier, smaller church, with Maharaja Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV himself contributing land and funds — a striking instance of a Hindu ruling dynasty patronising a major Christian institution in the city they governed. The design, by French architect Daly, draws heavily on Cologne Cathedral in Germany, with soaring twin spires, ribbed vaulting and stained-glass windows imported from France.
At roughly 175 feet, its spires made it one of the tallest church buildings in Asia at the time of completion, and it remains a defining part of the Mysuru skyline alongside the Amba Vilas Palace.
Getting there: The cathedral stands in central Mysuru city, about 2.5 km from Mysuru Palace and close to the city’s main post office.
