Talakaveri Kaveri River Origin
The sacred spring-fed tank on Brahmagiri hill revered as the mythological source of the Kaveri river, one of South India's most important pilgrimage sites.
Talakaveri, perched at roughly 1,300 meters on Brahmagiri hill in the Western Ghats, marks the mythological and hydrological origin of the Kaveri (Cauvery) river — one of peninsular India’s great rivers, sustaining agriculture across Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for hundreds of kilometres downstream. A small spring-fed tank (kundike) at the site is considered the river’s birthplace, and on Tula Sankramana each October, thousands gather to witness a brief upsurge of water in the tank, regarded as an auspicious moment.
A small temple dedicated to the river goddess Kaveriamma stands beside the tank, alongside a shrine to Agastya, the sage credited in legend with bringing the river down from the heavens. A flight of steps leads further up Brahmagiri hill to a viewpoint overlooking the Kodagu countryside and, on clear days, toward the Arabian Sea.
Getting there: Talakaveri is about 8 km beyond Bhagamandala and roughly 45 km from Madikeri; the Talakaveri Post Office serves the small settlement at the base of the pilgrimage steps.
