Tungabhadra Dam
A major post-independence multipurpose dam (completed 1953) on the Tungabhadra river whose reservoir and terraced gardens made it one of Karnataka's earliest large engineering projects and a key irrigation lifeline for the Krishna basin.
Built between 1945 and 1953 as a joint project of the erstwhile Madras and Hyderabad states along with the Mysore government, the Tungabhadra Dam was one of independent India’s earliest major multipurpose dam projects, harnessing the Tungabhadra river to irrigate a vast stretch of the Krishna river basin across present-day Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana. At close to 2.4 km long, it created a large reservoir that transformed agriculture across the region and supplies water for both irrigation and power generation.
The dam’s terraced Pampa Sarovar gardens and musical fountain, built along Mughal-garden lines on the reservoir’s edge, have become a popular recreational stop, and viewpoints near the dam offer distant views back toward the Hampi ruins downstream. For a district otherwise defined by 16th-century monuments, the dam is a reminder of Vijayanagara district’s 20th-century engineering history along the same river that once powered an empire.
Getting there: The dam is about 5 km from Hosapete town, which is also the nearest railhead and bus hub for Hampi. The post office is in Hosapete town centre.
