Udupi Sri Krishna Mutt
The 13th-century Krishna temple founded by the philosopher-saint Madhvacharya, worshipped uniquely through a silver-latticed window (Kanakana Kindi) and the seat of Dvaita Vedanta's eight monastic mathas.
The Sri Krishna Mutt was established in the 13th century by the philosopher-saint Madhvacharya, founder of the Dvaita (dualist) school of Vedanta, who is said to have installed the temple’s central Krishna idol after it arrived on a merchant ship rescued near the Malpe coast. Uniquely, devotees do not view the deity directly through the sanctum door but through the “Kanakana Kindi,” a silver-filigreed window at the rear — commemorating the low-caste devotee-saint Kanakadasa, who was denied entry and to whom the temple wall is said to have opened.
The mutt is administered on a strict rotating basis by eight subsidiary monasteries (the Ashta Mathas) founded by Madhvacharya’s direct disciples, each taking a two-year turn (Paryaya) managing worship and the temple’s famous free community kitchen, which feeds thousands daily.
Getting there: The mutt anchors Car Street in the heart of Udupi town, immediately opposite the Udupi Head Post Office.
