Vidhana Soudha
The granite seat of Karnataka's state legislature, built in 1956 in a Neo-Dravidian style to assert Indian architectural identity after independence, and the ceremonial anchor of Bengaluru's civic core.
Vidhana Soudha houses the Karnataka State Legislature and Secretariat. It was commissioned by then Chief Minister Kengal Hanumanthaiah, who wanted a building that reflected Indian โ not colonial โ architectural values after independence; the result blends Dravidian, Rajasthani, and British Neo Classical elements in granite and porphyry quarried and carved almost entirely by hand. Its scale (an entire city block) and its illuminated dome make it one of Bengaluruโs most recognisable landmarks, and it remains an active seat of government rather than a museum piece.
Getting there: Vidhana Soudha sits in the heart of Bengaluru, an easy walk from Cubbon Park and the Bengaluru GPO philatelic bureau. Note that public entry to the building itself is restricted; the site is best appreciated from the surrounding gardens, Ambedkar Veedhi, and Cubbon Park.
